CALL FOR FACULTY

The Institute for the International Education of Students (IES Abroad) invites scholars of modern China to teach at the IES Abroad Beijing Center for the Fall 2010 semester

The Institute for the International Education of Students, with over 50 years of history, is a leading U.S. study-abroad program for American university students. The Beijing Center is located at the Beijing Foreign Studies University (北京外国语大学) and has been in operation since 1990. Over the past twenty years, 1,250 American university students have studied at the IES Abroad Beijing Center.

Beijing Center Program Overview

IES Abroad Beijing has two programs: the Contemporary Issues Program (CIP) and the Language Intensive Program (LIP).

The Contemporary Issues Program (CIP) is designed for undergraduates with varying levels of Chinese language proficiency. It emphasizes an area studies curriculum and is structured as a "block" program (one block is 4.5 weeks in length), with a total of 3 blocks plus a 2-credit introductory course. The instructor for every course is expected to teach four morning classes every week during the block. Each class is 2.5 hours in length.

The Language Intensive Program (LIP) is designed for students with demonstrated Chinese language proficiency. It is structured as a semester-long program with students taking two area study courses in addition to their daily language instruction. Each course meets for a total of 13 weeks. The instructor for every course is expected to teach three hours (2 X 1.5-hour sessions) in the afternoons every week during the semester.

Courses

Currently, we seek qualified instructors to teach the following courses. The starting dates for the courses are approximations and are subject to change.

CIP – Modern Chinese Economy

The course provides an in-depth understanding of how China's economy has evolved during the past 50 years and its impact on the global economy. Classroom learning experiences are integrated with field research through a mobile classroom.

This course meets daily for 2.5 hours from 10/18 until 11/10 and involves a 14-day travel tour, covering a large territory representing a wide range of China's rural and urban life style. The instructor is only responsible for instruction during the mobile classroom portion of the course, IES will have support staff accompanying the trip to handle travel-related matters.

LIP – Doing Business in China

This course is a general introduction of overall China's business culture with a focus upon recognizing, understanding, and overcoming some culture gaps and business issues in various industry specific American business operations in China. The objective of this class is to help each student gain some up-to-date, realistic perspectives of doing business in China, and some basic strategies in overcoming cultural barriers to help achieve commercial success in China.

This course meets once or twice a week at our center for a total of 3 hours/week from September 1 to December 3 with a break from September 16-October 6.

Compensation

Compensation will be a stipend commensurate with the scholar's academic status and teaching experience. In addition, for instructors teaching in the Contemporary Issues Program (CIP) and who are based outside China or outside Beijing, the Beijing Center will provide round-trip transportation to Beijing and housing while the instructors teach at the Beijing Center.

Qualifications and Application Submission

Candidates with a doctorate degree, advanced doctoral candidates, or those with a graduate degree (an MBA or equivalent degree for the Doing Business in China Course) with substantial experience in the field and prior teaching experience will be considered. Applicants should send a C.V. and the names and contact information for two academic references who can address the applicant's teaching experience. A brief description of teaching methods the instructor has found to be successful with advanced undergraduate students is also helpful. All applications should be sent to Jeremiah Jenne, Associate Director for Academics at the IES Abroad Beijing Center, by email to jjenne@iesabroad.org.
Date posted: Tuesday, 6th July 2010
Contract: Permanent
Hours: Full-time
Categories: Research and Analysis

Pacific Epoch is looking for an experienced research analyst to work on a Chinese macroeconomic report for foreign institutional investors. The primary responsibility of this role will be to contribute to a weekly report in English for clients in the US, Europe and Asia; design and oversee surveys and research; and participate actively in idea generation.

Requirements:

- The successful candidate must have an in-depth knowledge of, and interest in, the Chinese economy and society, be comfortable working with numbers and analyzing data and have the ability to place trends in economic, social and historical context.

- An economics background is desirable; research experience is essential.

- We are looking for a native Mandarin speaker with strong spoken and written English. The successful candidate will be confident in expressing themselves in English, working with English-speaking colleagues and clients on a day-to-day basis and writing weekly reports in English for overseas clients. Native English speakers with fluent written and spoken Mandarin will be considered, but the candidate would have to demonstrate an ability to speak, read and write to an extremely high and technical level.
- We are looking for someone who can come up with creative ways to use data and information to shed light on various aspects of the Chinese economy through surveys, research and analysis. An ability to think outside of the box is therefore important.

- The successful candidate must also have strong inter-personal skills, be able to oversee surveys and manage researchers, and be proactive in generating ideas for the report each week.

- The ideal candidate would also have a network of business, economist and academic contacts, though this is not essential.

- Candidates must have at least two years' work experience in a relevant or related field.
